The Melting Pot vs the Great White North for the 2018 Olympic Gold Medal in Women’s Hockey
The Gangneung Hockey Centre roared to life as the two intensely heated rivals took to the ice as the 2018 Women's Olympic Hockey gold medal game begins. It's the Melting Pot (USA) versus the Great White North (Canada) for a showdown on the international stage as Canada is the favorite to win. Canada has won the last 24 Olympic matchups between team USA, but it was Jocelyn Lamoureux who pulled off an epic win for team USA in sudden death after more than 90 minutes of playtime on the ice battling Canada for the Gold medal.
The scoreboard sat empty for nearly twenty minutes until 25.4 seconds left in the 1st period when Hillary Knight with an assist from Sidney Morin sent the puck into their opponent's net. This sent Canada to the locker room with a ting of disappointment that didn't last long. With three minutes into the 2nd period, Haley Irwin with an assist from her teammate Blayre Turnbull answers back to the USA goal by bouncing the puck off Irwin's stick behind USA goaltender Maddie Rooney's back to tie up the game. This sent the USA defense into overtime, but it won't stop the Great White North from plowing their way to another goal; now leading two to one over the USA going into the 3rd period after playing a powerful period on the ice. Now it's team USA who heads to the locker room with a ting of disappointment. With six minutes and twenty-one seconds left in the 3rd period, Monique Lamoureux faces one-on-one, the Canadian goaltender Shannon Szabados as Lamoureux flicks the puck past Szabados glove and into the net for a tied 2-to-2 game sending the two teams into overtime.
This matchup has been very even since the beginning with the power struggle that ebbs and flows like the ocean's tides. Now with another twenty minutes on the clock and one less player per team on the ice, the players rush the ice to put an end to this game. However, with only seconds left on the overtime clock and both teams driving the puck aggressively toward their opposing team's goaltender it looks like this rivalry is headed toward a shootout.
It's all up to you. One player versus one goaltender for the 2018 Women's Olympic Hockey Gold medal. Number nineteen Gigi Marvin for team USA is the first to score in this intense one-on-one ice action but Meghan Agosta fired back with her own goal. Then Agosta's teammate Mélodie Daoust sends another puck past Rooney with incredible puck control. Up next is Amanda Kessel who answers Daoust's goal with a goal of her own. After five shots on goal from each team during the shootout, the Melting Pot and the Great White North are tied again pushing the game into sudden death.
The starting player for Sudden Death is Jocelyne Lamoureux, one of the two Lamoureux sisters playing for team USA. On the opposite side of the ice, it is Meghan Agosta for team Canada against Maddie Rooney the goalie for Team USA. Lamoureux is up first. Lamoureux takes the puck down the ice toward Szabados zigzagging from left to right as she closes the gap on Szabados and the net. Lamoureux in front of Szabados with a fake to the left and quickly back to the right around Szabados as Szabados scrambles but it's too late and Lamoureux gets the goal. Now the pressure is on. It's Agosta's turn to answer back to Lamoureux's goal to keep Canada in the game. Agosta takes the puck from center ice and begins to quickly close the gap on Rooney. Agosta with a couple of quick zigzags down the ice toward Rooney. Agosta tries to shoot the puck into the goal but it's blocked by Rooney. Game over the USA won the 2018 Women's Hockey Gold medal.
